Lämpimästi tervetuloa!
The title of the exhibition is a reference to Wassily Kandinsky’s book “Concerning the
Spiritual in Art”. Kandinsky was a painter and a musician. He found that it was easier to
express his inner emotional state by playing cello than by painting objects such as
landscapes and portraits. That is how abstract art came along. According to Kandinsky, the
purpose of abstract art is to open up an artist’s inner spiritual world.
How does musical composition relate to composition in visual art? Both of them have
elements that can be described as rhythm and melodies.
➢ In visual art, the rhythm is represented as sequences of similar elements.
➢ Melody corresponds to a visual path, or a leading line – something like a winding road
in the mountains.
